Gifts!!

1 Corinthians 12:1-11

1 Now, dear brothers and sisters,[a] regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. 2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice[b]; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.[c] 9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

Its a great feeling most of the time when we receive a gift and if you're the giving type, it’s awesome to see the person’s reaction and joy when they get it. Also shows a sense of care and appreciation if its a good/decent gift. God also gives us gifts, spiritual gifts or abilities, if we put them to good use we can use them to serve God for the right purpose. Everyone has the the gift of the Holy Spirit when we are born again, but sometimes we get gifts along our spiritual walk that God shows us. Just like at Christmas time people get gifts and most of the time everyone has something different. God is like that too! One person could have the gift of healing and the person beside them may have the gift of helps, and the next may have the gift of  discernment maybe. Sometimes we can have afew that are the same as our neighbour, but he doesn't give us a gift that we can’t use, God doesn't set us up for failure.

Something to be careful about gifts though is when people start telling you what your gift is or say that they see this as your gift. It’s one thing when someone may notice your gift that God has given you like the gift of helps. A person may notice a pattern you always help people and sometimes may compliment you on it, and that’s ok, as long as we remember to give the credit to God! Often times especially when you get older you don’t always get noticed for what you do that is good. God has blessings stored up in heaven for you. If people are prophesying gifts for you, or what God’s will is for your life, that is wrong. That you need to be careful of when people tell you your gifts. The verses say something about languages, I believe that they are talking about the gift of tongues. If you're unfamiliar with speaking in tongues it's a language that's between you and God. I don’t have that gift, but be very careful if someone is speaking in tongues. It is biblical to speak in tongues, BUT only if someone can interpret what the person is saying. It states it in the book of Acts too. You have to be careful because you’re not sure if they are praying to God or not. I certainly don’t have either gift. When you do have a gift always be careful how it’s used! We want our gifts to be used for God.

Sometimes it’s hard to notice some things about ourselves, but God will help us find them and or give them to us at the right time when we need it. God gives us spiritual gifts, not people. Sometimes a friend that knows us well can see/notice a gift in us, but it always comes down to God’s plan for our gifts.  He gives us gifts to serve Him in many and different ways that is possible.

  1. Excellent points there girl.  We do need to try and figure out what our gifts are so we can use them to glorify God and to be effective for sure. I agree though about other people speaking God's will on us, or saying that "they know we have the gift of prophecy" when God has not revealed it to us.  Always use discernment and question everything. Test what people are saying by Scripture and we'll be ok!

  2. Absolutly! thx, it is annoying when people tell you this is what God has for you! or just can't plain see me for me where my heart stands for God.
